LaChance and Francis Win It By Over Five Pounds!

Reported By: Larry Merseal Larry is sponsored by Anglers Pro Shop and Omega Custom Tackle Inc.

Thirty teams showed up to fish the East Ozark Bass Club’s 6th tournament of the season. With 16 limits weighed in, the bass were biting pretty well. The problem was finding the bigger fish. The winning team managed to catch a pair of kicker fish.

Steve Francis & Terry LaChance

Terry LaChance of Fredericktown, MO and Steve Francis of Brooklyn, TX take 1st place easily with a limit weighing 15.32 lbs. Terry said that they fished from Sulpher Springs to Cozart point and  just fished any area where he thought there were stumps.

Steve, a friend of Terry’s visiting from Texas, said that Terry has been fishing Wappapello for years, so I’m sure he has located plenty of stump flats over the years.

The team reported using a wide variety of baits which included dark colored worms, brush hogs, flukes, and even a finesse worm. They reported a very light bite. The kind of bite where you tell your partner, Hey... I think I have a bite!, but I’m not sure.

All of their bites came in 8 to 12 feet of water.

Terry and Steve also had Big Bass of the tournament. A Wappapello Whopper weighing in at 5.76 lbs.

Second place went to the Farmington, MO team of Clarence Murphy and Helen Phelan with four bass weighing in at 10 lbs. even. Clarence said they fished way up the river and concentrated on points most of the day.

They threw crawdad colored crankbaits and watermelon candy brush hogs with the bite coming from 3 to 8 feet of water. Helen boated two of their nicer keepers on back to back casts with one of them being the second big bass of the day weighing 4. 54 lbs.

Mark Browers & Derek Bennett

Third place went to the Ironton, MO team of Mark Browers and Derek Bennett with a 5 fish limit weighing 9.96 lbs. They fished from Holiday Landing to Chaonia, concentrating their efforts on channel edges. Mark reported that they used 6" watermelon worms and white spinner baits with most of their bites coming in around 5 feet of water.

Brian Hutson & Jeff Johnson

Fourth place went to the team of Brian Hutson and Jeff Johnson with a limit weighing 9.28lbs.

Fifth place went to the team of Harry Hull and Mike Walker with a limit weighing 8.56 lbs.

The fishing was pretty good until around noon. The club reported a decent top water and crankbait bite, with some bass being caught on the spinnerbait. But the majority of the bass weighed in were caught on plastic baits in colors ranging from watermelon to June bug. I think the majority of bass are in the summer pattern now.
